The California Typewriter Company provides service and sales for all makes and models of typewriters, fax machines, printers, calculators, and even word processors. In business since 1949, folks have been coming to the shop to find rare typewriters, repair beloved machines, or just get their printer back in action.

Herbert L. Permillion, III bought California Typewriter Co. in 1981 after having worked for IBM servicing Selectric Typewriters for almost 20 years. He has lived in the Bay Area since the 1950’s. He has always thought that typewriters are special and that they have an important place in the toolbox of society.

Herb's daughters Carmen and Candace work in the shop. Carmen has been here at California Typewriter since the beginning: greeting customers, answering phones, and keeping the place running smoothly. She loves her job and prides herself in her ability to figure out the right machine for your needs.

Kenneth Alexander is a master of typewriter repair, with over 42 years of experience. Ken's motto is, "Keep 'em typing!".

Family owned and operated.

One may wonder how California Typewriter, in this age of computers and smartphones, managed to stay in business so many years after the typewriter appeared to have passed its prime as a universal means of communicating.

The secret is:

We've supported each other all of these years in doing what we love to do, and that's to serve our community with the skills that we've honed over the course of our entire lives. The community gives back to us by sharing the wonderful things they create using the machines we fix for them or that they buy from us: poetry, novels, screenplays, recipes, or just a kind thank-you note. We get a great deal of joy and satisfaction knowing that we serve not only the local business community, but the exciting creative community in Berkeley, the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond.

The typewriter continues to speak to and through all of us, and we're proud as a family to share this idea with our customers and our friends.
